Matteo Amitaba Mole' is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University, specializing in Reproductive, Perinatal & Stem Cell Biology Research. He is faculty member of the Division of Reproductive, Stem Cell and Perinatal Biology, the Dunlevie Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center for Discovery, Innovation and Clinical Impact, and the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. He also holds memberships in Bio-X, the Cardiovascular Institute, and the Maternal & Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI).
Dr. Mole' received his PhD from University College London (UCL) and completed postdoctoral research fellowships at the University of Cambridge and the Babraham Institute. During his postdoctoral work, he established a license under the UK Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) to conduct research on human embryos donated by patients undergoing IVF.
Dr. Mole's research focuses on investigating the complex process of human embryo implantation, which has been traditionally referred to as the enigmatic stage of human embryonic development due to limited availability of suitable model systems. His laboratory has developed three-dimensional cell-engineered systems that closely recapitulate the cytoarchitecture of the human endometrium, providing a unique opportunity to investigate human implantation in vitro. His work aims to study the mechanobiology and key features of tissue receptivity that support successful implantation.
Analysis of Dr. Mole's publications reveals a strong focus on embryonic development, particularly human embryo implantation and early developmental processes. His research spans comparative studies between human and mouse development, cellular mechanisms of implantation, and the molecular crosstalk at the embryo-maternal interface. His work combines advanced techniques including single-cell analyses, tissue engineering, and live-imaging to unravel the complexities of early human development.
Dr. Mole' actively mentors students and postdoctoral scholars across multiple programs including Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, Biophysics, and Maternal-Fetal Medicine. His laboratory provides research opportunities for undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows interested in reproductive biology and early embryonic development.
The Mole' Laboratory is located at the Lorry I. Lokey Stem Cell Research Building at Stanford University. The lab focuses on modeling the human endometrium, studying implantation of the human embryo in vitro, and developing therapeutics for implantation enhancement. The research team includes a lab manager, postdoctoral scholars, PhD students, and undergraduate researchers working collaboratively to advance understanding of human embryo implantation.
