Matt Whited is a Professor of Chemistry and Chair of the Chemistry Department at Carleton College. He earned a BS from Davidson College and a PhD from the California Institute of Technology, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Southern California (2009–2011) and a Visiting Scholar role at UNC-Chapel Hill (2022). Since joining Carleton in 2010, he has led innovative research and teaching initiatives in inorganic and organometallic chemistry.
Research Interests:
- Metal/Main-Group cooperative catalysis (Si, etc.)
- Small molecule activation (CO2, CO, N2, alkanes)
- X-ray crystallography in undergraduate education
- Development of course-based research experiences
- Adaptive expertise in STEM education
Recent Awards:
- NSF-CAREER Awardee (2016–2023)
- Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar
- ACS Virtual Issue Featured Author (2023)
- NSF grant for cooperative catalysis (2023–2026)
Grants: Current funding includes an ACS-PRF grant (2025–2028) and an NSF-CHE grant for silylene-based catalysis (2023–2026). He co-led a NEH Humanities Connections grant (2024–2025) to bridge STEM and humanities education.
Teaching: Matt teaches general and advanced inorganic chemistry courses (e.g., CHEM 124, CHEM 351, CHEM 352) with an emphasis on hands-on research experiences. He directs the Integrated STEM Program and has developed new lab modules incorporating modern crystallography.
