Matt Turnbull is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Clemson University, serving as the Undergraduate Program Coordinator. His research focuses on insect-virus interactions, particularly nudiviruses in lepidopteran pests like Helicoverpa zea. He holds a Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Kentucky (2002), an M.A. in Biology from the College of William & Mary (1999), and a B.S. in Biology from the same institution (1994).
Research interests include viral pathogenesis in insects, bioelectric phenomena in insect physiology, and the ecological impacts of viruses on pest populations. His lab investigates mechanisms of viral transmission, host immune responses, and applications of virus biology for pest management. Current students include Jabez Battu (PhD) and Alexis Yoh (MS), with recent alumni spanning microbiology and entomology.
Turnbull teaches courses in Comparative Physiology (BIOL4750), Animal Diversity (BIOL8450), and Insect Physiology (ENT8700). His work integrates virology, entomology, and environmental science, with affiliations to the American Society for Virology and Entomology Society of America. His lab is located in Jordan Hall, Clemson University.
