Matt Syal is a Professor of Construction Management at Michigan State University's School of Planning, Design and Construction, with an additional appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He coordinates the Construction Management master's program and serves as advisor to Sigma Lambda Chi. Holding a PhD in Civil Engineering from Penn State University (1992), he also earned advanced degrees from the University of Kansas (1986) and New Delhi's School of Planning and Architecture (1982).

His research focuses on Construction Project Management, Sustainable Built Environment, and Housing, particularly examining green construction practices and cross-cultural implementation challenges.
His research portfolio includes over 50 funded projects totaling millions in grants from agencies like the National Science Foundation, EPA, and Fulbright Commission. Notable initiatives include the Housing Education and Research Center, Sustainable Construction Management Initiative, and multiple US-India collaborations. Syal's work with international organizations has produced comprehensive training frameworks for electrical contractors and BIM implementation guides for small firms.
As a published researcher with over 100 refereed papers and 50 technical reports, his recent work explores machine learning applications for energy consumption prediction, deconstruction economics, and smart grid technologies in housing. Current projects examine urban infrastructure revitalization, climate change mitigation through building codes, and international joint venture models for sustainable construction.
