Dr. Matt Selway is a Lecturer in Media and Film Studies at York St John University, where he has served as a full-time academic since 2017. He holds a PhD in Film Studies from the University of East Anglia (2016), following a First Class honours degree in Media (2011) and an MA in Cinema, Television, and Society (2012, Distinction) from York St John and the University of York, respectively.
His research focuses on the representation of mental disorders in film, particularly exploring intersections with national identity, gender, race, and class. He has published work on films like The Hours and presented at conferences such as the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS) Annual Conference. Selway is also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and currently serves as Level 1 Coordinator for Media and Film programs, overseeing first-year students.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on Media Research, Visual Cultures, Media Enterprise, and Gender and Sexualities. He has supervised dissertations on topics ranging from celebrity culture to body image in media. Beyond academia, he volunteers with the NHS, applying his expertise to mental health initiatives through film screenings.
