Matt Miller-Dicks is an Associate Professor in Skill Acquisition at the University of Portsmouth’s School of Psychology, Sport and Health Sciences. He leads the Research Theme in Culture, Behaviour, Inclusivity, and Governance within the school and is a member of the Centre for Interaction, Development and Diversity. His academic career includes roles as a Lecturer at the German Sport University Cologne and postdoctoral work at VU University Amsterdam, alongside visiting professorships in France. He holds external examiner roles at Brunel University London and London South Bank University.
Miller-Dicks’ research focuses on visual control of movement in natural environments, leveraging mobile eye-tracking technology to study perception-action adaptation across domains like sport, health, and safety. His work has been applied to enhance decision-making in sports like football and rugby, as well as in public safety contexts. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles, edited two books, and delivered over 40 keynotes.
His research projects include studies on perceptual-motor control, youth-led recreational space development, and psychophysiological stress in coaches. Grants include leadership on initiatives like the ‘Empowering youth to lead the (re-)development of recreational spaces’ project (2023–2026). He collaborates internationally, with active networks in France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
Miller-Dicks’ expertise spans sport science, experimental psychology, and applied research, with a focus on translating findings into practical training frameworks. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being (SDG 3) and quality education (SDG 4), emphasizing skill acquisition and inclusive governance in sport.
