Matthew Innes is a Professor of History at Birkbeck, University of London, and currently serves as Vice-Master. His career includes roles as Head of Department, Dean, and Pro-Vice-Master overseeing academic strategy. He holds a first-class degree and PhD from the University of Cambridge, followed by research fellowships and academic posts at Cambridge, Birmingham, and York before joining Birkbeck in 1999.
His research focuses on early medieval Europe (300–1100 CE), particularly the Carolingian Empire. Key themes include social hierarchies, economic transformation, legal documents, and the role of memory in shaping historical narratives. He critiques traditional historiography by emphasizing human agency and power dynamics influencing documentary evidence preservation.
Dr. Innes has supervised over a dozen PhD students, including Caroline Clark, whose work has been published. His publications span monographs, edited volumes, and articles on topics ranging from Carolingian governance to medieval legal practices. He advocates for accessible higher education, reflecting his working-class background and belief in education's transformative potential.
