Dr Matt Howard is a Lecturer in Law at the Kent Law School (University of Kent), joining in Spring 2022. He holds a PhD (2017) and LLB from the University of Kent, alongside an LLM in Law and Political Justice from Birkbeck, University of London. His research focuses on the interplay between memory, time, and legal identity, exploring how memory validates/challenges belonging and shapes legal consciousness. Currently, he co-leads a BA/Leverhulme-funded project examining Mediterranean search-and-rescue volunteers' legal perceptions amid bureaucratic challenges.
Teaching responsibilities include Introduction to Property and Land Law. He welcomes PhD supervision in socio-legal topics related to memory, belonging, and legal legitimacy. Professional roles include membership on the executive committee of the Socio-Legal Studies Association.
Research highlights include his monograph Law’s Memories (2022) and articles addressing militarism, legal standardization, and posthumanism. His work bridges socio-legal theory with empirical studies on legal narratives and institutional practices.
