Matt Hearn is an Associate Professor at Lipscomb University's Department of English & Modern Languages. He has been affiliated with Lipscomb since 1999, previously serving as Department Chair (1999–2013). He holds a BA in English from Lipscomb University (1977), an MA in English Literature from Vanderbilt University (1981), and a PhD in Literature from Duke University (1990). His academic roles include HPAC Director and member of the Faculty Senate Council. Hearn specializes in Middle English literature, literary theory, and interdisciplinary studies, teaching courses ranging from Shakespeare to film studies. He has designed unique courses combining biology, theology, history, and literature with literary studies. His professional engagements include serving as a writing consultant for Tennessee’s Board of Workers’ Compensation and leading Lipscomb’s Global Studies programs in London, Vienna, and Florence.

Research interests span medieval literature, film studies, legal writing pedagogy, and interdisciplinary curricula. His awards reflect his teaching excellence and advising skills, including twice winning Outstanding University Teacher and Outstanding Academic Advisor.
Hearn currently serves on Lipscomb’s Health Professions Advising Committee and volunteers as a pastoral elder at Otter Creek Church of Christ. He and his wife Mary have two Lipscomb alumni sons.
