Matt Goldrick is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Northwestern University, where he also directs the Cognitive Science Program. His research focuses on the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying language processing in monolingual and bilingual speakers, employing behavioral experiments and computational models. Key areas include speech production, bilingualism, and neurolinguistic disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Goldrick is affiliated with multiple interdisciplinary programs at Northwestern, including the Institute for Innovations in Developmental Science and the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program. He has secured grants from NSF and NIMH for projects exploring speech analysis, motor features in psychopathology, and language decline in bilingual aging populations. An active collaborator, he contributes to initiatives like Bilingualism Matters Chicago, advocating for evidence-based bilingual education and community outreach. His work bridges theoretical linguistics with applied research, emphasizing practical implications for education and clinical contexts.
Research Support:
- NSF DRL 2219843: Enhancing research on speech and deep learning through holistic acoustic analysis
- NIMH MH134369: Motoric features of the voice as indicators of psychomotor agitation in MDD
Affiliations Beyond NU:
- Organizing committee, Reviewer Zero
- Affiliate, Bilingualism Matters Chicago
- Affiliate, Penn State Center for Language Science
Recent Research Themes:
Goldrick’s publications analyze bilingual language decline in Alzheimer’s patients, perceptual similarity spaces in speech, and computational methods for speech analysis. His work on code-switching perception in noise and diadochokinetic speech dynamics highlights interdisciplinary approaches to language processing. He also advocates for equitable peer review practices and inclusive research cultures in academia.
