Matt Ault

Matt Ault is a Senior Lecturer and School Technologies Lead at the Manchester School of Art, Manchester Metropolitan University. He teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including leadership roles in the BA(Hons) Architecture and Master of Architecture programs. His academic service includes committee memberships for Manchester Town Hall engagement and PrintCity's digital fabrication initiative.

Academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Architecture, BA(Hons) Architecture, and Master of Engineering (Structural Engineering with Architecture and French) from Hautes Etudes Industrielles, Lille, France. Prior to academia, Ault worked internationally at Foster + Partners on large-scale projects spanning airports, high-rise developments, and cultural venues.

Research explores architectural geometry and structural design integration through computational methods. Focus areas include algorithmic approaches to material and environmental performance in architectural delivery. Recent investigations examine knitted textiles as proliferated component systems and augmented reality in spatial design.

Publications demonstrate sustained focus on material innovation and digital tectonics, with recent work exploring knitted stitch systems and AR applications. Earlier research investigated 're-fabrication' potentials of textiles in architectural contexts, presented internationally including at the Venice Biennale.

Administrative contributions include acting Programme Leader for Architecture (2018/19), digital fabrication committee membership, and peer review for the International Journal of Rapid Manufacturing. Cross-disciplinary collaborations include supervision of engineering students at University of Manchester's MACE department.
