Prasad Potluri is a Professor and Chair in Robotics and Textile Composites in the Department of Materials Engineering at the University of Manchester. He has established the Textile Composites Group in 2000 and is affiliated with the Northwest Composites Centre and the Aerospace Research Institute.
His educational background includes a BE, MTech, and PhD from the University of Manchester.
Professor Potluri's research focuses on Textile Composites with applications in Aerospace, Automotive, Marine, and Energy sectors. His interdisciplinary approach combines Robotics, Textile Processing, Mechanics of flexible fibre assemblies, and Experimental mechanics. His specific research areas include Textile Preforming techniques such as Robotic Fibre Placement, Braiding of advanced composite preforms, Novel multi-needle stitching processes, 3D weaving, and Non-crimp woven preforms. He also investigates Processing Mechanics including Draping of biaxial fabrics and Fabric compliance models, as well as Mechanics of Textile Composites at micro- and meso-scales.
His recent work spans materials science, composite engineering, and robotics applications, with publications focusing on 3D printing of biomaterials, textile composites, and graphene-based sensors. His research contributes to several UN Sustainable Development Goals through applications in sustainable materials and manufacturing.
- Editorial Board member of 'Textile Research Journal'
- Member of EPSRC Peer Review College since 2003
Professor Potluri has supervised 62 students and has been involved in significant research projects including the Centre for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. His work has led to technological impacts in robotic and mechatronic manufacturing of 3D shell-shaped textile products for medical and structural applications.
He leads the Textile Composites Group which is part of the Northwest Composites Centre, focusing on Polymers, Composites and Carbon Textile Technology.
