Marshall's scholarly work centers on how ecological, financial, social, and cultural sustainability become embedded in daily routines. She investigates food storage and preservation across historical and contemporary contexts, alongside cultural interpretations of winter and cold. Her approach combines ethnographic fieldwork with material culture analysis to uncover the nuanced relationships between humans, food, and the environment.
Her publication record demonstrates a clear trajectory toward understanding resilience in food systems, particularly through household and professional food storage practices. This body of work addresses climate change adaptation, crisis preparedness, and the cultural heritage of preservation techniques.
