Matias Slavov

Matias Slavov is a prominent philosopher specializing in the philosophy of time, metaphysics, and the history of science. He currently holds a visitor position at Tampere University's Research Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of History, Philosophy and Literary Studies. Additionally, he serves as an adjunct professor (docent) in the history and philosophy of science at the University of Jyväskylä. His academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Jyväskylä (2016), a visiting scholar role at UCLA's Philosophy Department (2017-2019), and a postdoctoral fellowship with the Academy of Finland (2020-2023). He has also held teaching roles, including a senior lecturer position at the University of Oulu and philosophy of science courses at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology.

Slavov's research focuses on naturalistic philosophy of time, particularly the prospects of eternalism. His work investigates the origins of eternalism, its compatibility with everyday temporal experience, and its relevance in modern physics. Key publications include Relational Passage of Time (2022), Hume's Natural Philosophy and Philosophy of Physical Science (2020), and articles in journals such as History of Philosophy Quarterly and Ratio. His current project, The Prospects of Eternalism, explores whether eternalism provides a coherent metaphysics of time by addressing its historical roots, experiential challenges, and engagement with cutting-edge physics.

Slavov has received funding from the Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Academy of Finland. His scholarship bridges historical figures like David Hume and contemporary debates in relativity theory, emphasizing empirical concepts and relationist ontology. He actively contributes to academic discourse through editorial roles, international collaborations, and outreach, including his Aeon essay on Einstein and Hume's time concepts.
