Matias Kallevik is a Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of History at the University of Oslo, affiliated with the Institute of Archaeology, Conservation and History. His research is conducted through the interdisciplinary ClimateCultures project, a collaboration between the University of Oslo and NTNU examining socionatural entanglements during Norway's Little Ice Age (1500-1800).
Education:
- MA in History (2021), University of Oslo. Thesis: "Was There a 'Tambora Crisis'? Linking volcanic impacts and nineteenth century history".
- Teacher of English and History at Rud Upper Secondary School (2018-2022).
His research centers on Climate History and Environmental History, specifically investigating how extreme climatic events in 18th-century Norway triggered crop failures, famines, and disease outbreaks. He analyzes the complex interactions between these environmental stresses and societal structures, including cultural adaptations, knowledge transmission systems, public health responses, and political decision-making during crises.
Kallevik is supported by the ClimateCultures project funding and participates in the university's Climate, environment and energy (KLIMER) research group, contributing to historical climate-society interaction studies.
