Mathieu Piavaux is a researcher at the Institute of Life-Earth-Environment (University of Liège), specializing in archaeology, heritage conservation, and historical architecture. His work spans material history, limestone trade, and restoration projects in Belgium, particularly focusing on the Meuse Valley quarries and 19th–20th-century architectural techniques.
- Education: Doctor of History, Art and Archaeology from the University of Liège (thesis on Sainte Croix Collégiale in Liège).
His recent research includes the economic history of stone in the Meuse Valley (12th–18th centuries) and bioarchaeological studies of historic cemeteries. He has organized doctoral study days and served on committees like the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (FRS-FNRS).
As a supervisor, Piavaux has guided PhD students such as M. Macaux and C. Houbart. Key collaborations include projects with H. Cambier and M. Lefftz on Rheno-Mosan filigree decoration and Meuse Valley quarries.
