Mathieu Gravey holds a Researcher position at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in the Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research (ÖAW-IGF), where he has served as a junior group leader since March 2023. He earned his PhD in Geostatistics in 2020 from the Faculty of Geosciences and Environment (FGSE) at the University of Lausanne (UNIL), transitioning from a background in computer engineering.
Gravey's research integrates cutting-edge technologies like Google Earth Engine (where he is an expert developer) and high-performance computing to tackle diverse geoscience challenges. His projects span bird migration, global landscape monitoring, alpine greening, and bushfire analysis. He aims to develop innovative Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) that improve accuracy and flexibility compared to traditional methods, potentially revolutionizing energy and cost efficiency in terrain modeling.
Gravey emphasizes quality over quantity in research, advocating for independent, creativity-driven PhD work. He previously served as an Assistant Professor in Geo-Environmental Data Science at the University of Utrecht, Netherlands, but left due to limited research resources. His interdisciplinary approach, blending computer science with geosciences, stems from his formative years at UNIL's IDYST Institute, where he served on the council and benefited from a dynamic academic network.
