Mathias Schonbuch is a Lecturer at the University of Rouen Normandy, affiliated with the UFR Letters and Human Sciences. He specializes in Italian literature of the Middle Ages, particularly the works of Boccaccio and the literary forms of the tale and epistolary writing. His research explores themes of exile, narrative strategies, and cultural exchange in medieval texts.
He has contributed to significant projects such as the ANR 'EDITEF' (Éditions ITaliennes En France au XVIe siècle) and co-directed the FIBIA project (Ancient Iberian and Italian Funds of the Rouen Municipal Library). His administrative roles include Director of the Department of Romance Studies (2009–2012) and Head of Axis 1 in the IRIHS research group (2008–2012).
His publications analyze Boccaccio’s Decameron and other medieval texts through lenses of rhetoric, violence representation, and cultural diplomacy. He has also investigated the reception of Boccaccio’s works in Normandy, highlighting transregional literary networks.
He serves on academic bodies such as the CNU 14th section (substitute member, 2011–2013) and actively participates in scholarly initiatives like the ERIAC research center, contributing to axes such as 'Spaces, cultures, politics' and 'Linguistic approaches.'
