Mathias Möschel is a Professor and Head of Department at the Central European University. He specializes in comparative constitutional law, international human rights law, and non-discrimination law, with a focus on critical race theory and gender perspectives. Prior to CEU, he held positions at the University of Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense, New York University, and the Institut de Droit Comparé (Paris II). He has also worked at the European Commission and practiced law in a Silicon Valley firm. He is admitted to the New York Bar.
His education includes a Ph.D. in Law from the European University Institute (Florence), an LL.M. from Berkeley School of Law, and a Laurea in Law from the University of Milan. His research bridges legal frameworks and social justice issues, emphasizing intersectionality in discrimination cases and the role of courts in advancing human rights. Key themes include racial profiling, gender equality, EU anti-discrimination policies, and the application of critical race theory in European legal systems.
His scholarship spans over two decades, analyzing landmark cases such as Abdu v. Bulgaria and Case C-621/21 WS, and exploring topics like judicial independence, gender parity in politics, and the legal construction of racism. His work often critiques legal systems’ failure to address systemic discrimination and advocates for race-conscious approaches to law.
