معرفی
Mathias Kolle is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), School of Engineering, where he leads cutting-edge research in biologically inspired photonics and optical materials. His work bridges engineering, biology, and materials science to develop novel optical technologies.
Education:
- M.Sc., Saarland University (2006)
- Ph.D., University of Cambridge (2010)
Professor Kolle's research focuses on biologically inspired tunable optical materials, scalable manufacturing techniques, and the morphogenesis of photonic structures in nature. He investigates how organisms like the blue-rayed limpet, butterflies, and flowering plants manipulate light through structural coloration, applying these principles to engineer advanced optical materials. His work spans bioimaging, instrumentation development, and biomimetic design for real-world applications in displays, sensors, and energy-efficient technologies.
Analysis of his publications (2009-2015) reveals a consistent trajectory in biomimetic photonics, with increasing emphasis on tunable and responsive optical systems. Early work centered on natural photonic structures in butterflies and plants, while later research developed strain-responsive materials and scalable fabrication methods. Key themes include structural color mechanisms, bioinspired micrograting design, and the interplay between mechanical deformation and optical properties.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Human Frontier Science Program Grant (2021)
- Stepping Strong Innovator Award (2018)
- Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship (2011-2013)
- Multiple best poster awards (2011-2014)
- Dissertation honors from Cambridge and German Physical Society (2011)
Professor Kolle serves on MIT's Mechanical Engineering Graduate Admissions Committee (2013-present) and teaches Measurement and Instrumentation (2.671). His research is supported by competitive grants including the Human Frontier Science Program award. He leads the Laboratory for Biologically Inspired Photonic Engineering, which develops cost-efficient fabrication techniques for optical materials inspired by biological systems, with applications ranging from medical diagnostics to sustainable architecture.
