Daniel E. Morse

Dr. Daniel E. Morse is a Research Professor and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. He holds affiliations with the Marine Science Institute (MSI), Biomolecular Science and Engineering (BMSE), and BioEngineering (BioEng). His research bridges molecular biology, genetics, and materials science, focusing on biomineralization, biophotonics, and bio-inspired nanotechnology. He developed 'Silicon Biotechnology' for low-temperature semiconductor fabrication and pioneered studies on tunable photonic systems in marine organisms, such as squid reflectins.

Morse earned his B.A. in Biochemistry from Harvard University, Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and conducted postdoctoral work at Stanford University. He previously served as Silas Arnold Houghton Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School before joining UCSB.

Awarded as one of Scientific American's Top 50 Innovators (2006), he is a Fellow of the AAAS, Materials Research Society, and Smithsonian Institution. His honors include NIH Career Development and American Cancer Society Research Awards. His work has led to advancements in optoelectronics, solar energy conversion, and high-power battery materials.

Research highlights include discoveries on reflectin proteins' role in tunable coloration, Bragg reflectors in marine organisms, and biomimetic approaches to semiconductor fabrication. He has lectured globally at institutions like the University of Cambridge and University of Paris, and advised students recognized internationally.

Morse's labs and collaborations span UCSB-MIT-Caltech's Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies (ICB) and MSI, focusing on marine-derived biotechnologies and bio-inspired photonics. His current work explores neuronal and biochemical control of tunable biophotonics for next-generation optoelectronics.
