Mathias Koch

Mathias Koch is a Professor at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK) since September 2015. He studied jazz drums at the Vienna Conservatory (now MUK) from 2000 to 2005 under Walter Grassmann. His artistic practice integrates jazz, improvisation, and composition with multimedia and dance productions.

Koch's research explores interdisciplinary sound design, rhythmic experimentation, and cross-genre innovation, spanning jazz, world music, rock, and funk. He focuses on developing individual musical language through solo programs and collaborative performances.

Notable achievements include:

• World Music Award with klezmer band 'Nifty's' (2006)
• Ö1 Artist of the Year (2007)
• Publicity Prize of the SKE with 'Low Frequency Orchestra' (2007)
• Junge Ohren Prize for 'Bienenkino' (2009)
• Federal composition grant for dance performance 'De-Il-Lusion' (2013)

He regularly premieres works at venues including Tanzquartier Wien, Wiener Festwochen, and ImPulsTanz Festival, with recordings supported by the Austrian Music Fund.
