Mathias Francois is a Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Sydney's School of Medical Sciences within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. He is affiliated with the Charles Perkins Centre and collaborates with international institutions like the National Institutes of Health (USA). His research focuses on vascular and lymphatic system development, particularly the roles of SOX transcription factors (SOX7, SOX17, SOX18) in embryonic morphogenesis, disease pathogenesis, and cancer metastasis. Key projects include engineering transcription factors for cell fate transitions, pharmacological modulation of SOX18 activity in tumors, and studying vascular progenitors in melanoma progression.
Research interests span developmental biology, stem cell biology, and molecular mechanisms underlying vascular disorders. He investigates how transcription factors regulate blood and lymphatic vessel formation, with applications to conditions like infantile hemangioma and rare genetic vascular syndromes.
His grants include funding from the NHMRC, ARC, and NIH for projects targeting vascular niches in cancer, transcription factor inhibitors, and genetic interactions in lymphangiogenesis. He currently advises two students: Mahnoor MIAN (Sox7 and cardiac imaging) and Jasmine NGUYEN (dipeptidyl peptidase 9 in lung pathogenesis). Collaborative work with labs in Sydney and overseas emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to vascular biology and regenerative medicine.
