Mathias Bös

Prof. Dr. Mathias Bös is a Professor of Theoretical Sociology at the Institute of Sociology, Faculty of Philosophy, Leibniz University Hannover since 2013. His institutional roles include Chair of the Audit Committee, representation on multiple examination boards including the Joint Examination Board for Social Sciences and Sociology programs, and membership on the Center for Atlantic and Global Studies board.

Prof. Bös' research focuses on internationally comparative social structural and cultural change, particularly in Europe and North America, with special emphasis on migration and ethnicization processes, global conflict dynamics, and the history of ideas and science. His work spans migration, race and ethnic relations, nation-state formation, globalization, religion, and historical sociology. His current research examines cultural heritage production in ethnoheterogeneous societies among Dutch, Portuguese, and Frisian groups in Northern Germany.

His publication record reveals consistent scholarly engagement with themes of migration, ethnicity, and nation-state formation across multiple continents and historical periods. His recent works demonstrate increasing attention to cultural heritage, transnationalism, and the evolving nature of citizenship in globalized societies.

Prof. Bös has supervised numerous doctoral students including Anna-Lena Kökgiran, Olga Hirning, and Lotta Mayer. He maintains active involvement in academic governance through roles on the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Philosophy and the Budget Working Group.
