Mathew J. Creighton is a Professor at Boğaziçi University, specializing in sociological research focusing on xenophobia, migration, discrimination, and social attitudes. He coordinates the Horizon Europe-funded EqualStrength project addressing structural discrimination and hate crimes in Europe. His recent book Hidden Hate: The Resilience of Xenophobia (2023, Columbia University Press) analyzes covert and overt expressions of xenophobia across contexts. Creighton holds a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania (2009) in Sociology and Demography, with interdisciplinary work spanning political science, public health, and urban studies.
His research emphasizes masked intolerance dynamics, experimental methods, and comparative analyses of immigration policies. Key projects include studies on Brexit’s impact on anti-immigrant sentiment, masked opposition mechanisms in multilingual regions like Catalonia, and the relationship between educational mobility and social justice perceptions in European societies. Creighton’s work has been supported by grants from EU frameworks and leverages innovative methodologies such as name-based treatments and list experiments to uncover socially undesirable attitudes.
