Dr Mathew Guest is a Professor in the Sociology of Religion at Durham University’s Department of Theology and Religion. His research focuses on the sociology of Christianity in late modern Western cultures, particularly the evangelical movement and religious dynamics within university settings. He has authored or edited six books, including Evangelical Identity and Contemporary Culture (2007) and Christianity and the University Experience (2013). Guest has led major research projects such as the AHRC/ESRC-funded ‘Christianity and the University Experience in Contemporary England’ and co-investigated initiatives like ‘Re/presenting Islam on Campus’ and ‘Chaplains on Campus’. In 2013, he served as a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Victoria, British Columbia.
His work examines institutional frameworks shaping religious identity formation, with a focus on British contexts. Guest has collaborated extensively, co-authoring studies with scholars like Douglas Davies and leading interdisciplinary teams. His recent projects address gender dynamics in theological careers and the representation of Islam on UK campuses.
