Professor Mathew Aitchison is a Professor of Architecture and CEO of the Building 4.0 Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) at Monash University. He previously held the position of Professor of Architecture at the University of Sydney and directed the Innovation in Applied Design Lab (IAD Lab). His research focuses on industrialized building systems, prefabricated housing, and sustainable construction practices. He leads large-scale collaborative projects funded by industry and government, emphasizing the transition from product-based to process-oriented building methods.
Professor Aitchison has extensive international experience as an architect, educator, and researcher, working in Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, the UK, USA, and Australia. His work bridges academic research with practical applications, collaborating with public and private sectors globally through initiatives like the Future Building Initiative. He is the lead author of *Prefab Housing and the Future of Building: Product to Process* (2018) and has contributed to journals such as the *Journal of Architectural Education* and *AA Files*.
His research interests include 20th-century architectural discourses, urban design theories, and the socio-technical challenges of industrialized construction. He actively participates in conferences and public lectures, such as the 'Future of Building' event in 2018. Currently, he oversees the Building 4.0 CRC, aiming to advance building technology and efficiency through interdisciplinary collaboration.
Professor Aitchison is not accepting additional PhD students at this time. His contributions to architectural education and innovation have been highlighted in media outlets like *The Fifth Estate* and *Domain*, emphasizing his role in reshaping Australia’s built environment.
