Massimo Palma is a Full Professor in theoretical condensed matter and quantum optics theory at the University of Palermo, leading the Department of Physics and Chemistry 'Emilio Segrè'. He holds a PhD in quantum optics from the University of Palermo and Imperial College London, with postdoctoral experience at Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics and the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford. A pioneer of Quantum Information Theory since 1992, he co-founded the Italian Society for Quantum Science and Technology (SISTEQ). His research focuses on quantum information processing, optomechanics, quantum thermodynamics, and machine learning applications in quantum systems. Palma has served as founding chairman of the PhD program in Physical and Chemical Sciences (2013–2021) and holds editorial roles at journals like New Journal of Physics and Entropy.
His research interests span quantum state preparation, thermalization dynamics, and foundational questions in quantum theory. Recent work highlights include quantum extreme learning machines for photonic entanglement and studies on quantum information scrambling. Palma’s contributions to quantum technologies are supported by leadership in interdisciplinary initiatives, including the Ettore Majorana Foundation’s school on non-equilibrium phenomena. He advises on grants like ASpEQCt and HyQelm, and his lab explores cutting-edge quantum phenomena with experimental collaborations in optomechanics and quantum networks.
