معرفی
Massimo Franceschetti is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD).
His academic background includes:
- Laurea degree, magna cum laude, in Computer Engineering from the University of Naples (1997)
- M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (1999)
- Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (2003)
Prior to his appointment at UCSD, he was a post-doctoral scholar at the University of California at Berkeley for two years.
Professor Franceschetti's research spans the following key areas:
- Random Networks
- Wave Propagation in Random Media
- Wireless Communication
- Control over Networks
He combines information theory and electromagnetism to tackle fundamental problems in large-scale wireless networks, such as ad-hoc networks without infrastructure. His work has advanced the understanding of throughput scaling and the role of spatial diversity in wireless communications, including deriving outer bounds using electromagnetic theory and demonstrating the optimality of multi-hop operation in constant-density networks.
His achievements have been honored with the following awards:
- C. H. Wilts Prize (2003) for best doctoral thesis at Caltech
- S. A. Schelkunoff Award (2005) for best paper in IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation
- NSF CAREER Award (2006)
- ONR Young Investigator Award (2007)
- IEEE Communications Society Best Tutorial Paper Award (2010)
He has held visiting positions at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, and the University of Trento. Additionally, he serves as an Associate Editor for Communication Networks of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory and has guest-edited issues of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communication.
His research is supported by competitive grants including the NSF CAREER award and the ONR Young Investigator award. While specific student advisees are not listed in the available text, his role as an Associate Professor involves graduate student mentorship in communication systems theory.
