Massimo Filippi

Massimo Filippi is a Full Professor of Neurology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University (UNISR) in Milan. He serves as Director of the Neurology Unit and Multiple Sclerosis Center at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, and as Principal Investigator of the Neurotech Hub. His roles include leadership in the Quantitative Neuroimaging Unit, BrainMap Project, and international editorial positions.

• Education: Degree in Medicine (1986) and Neurology (1990) from University of Milan, Neurophysiology (1994) from University of Pavia.

His research focuses on leveraging MRI and advanced neuroimaging techniques to study pathological mechanisms and disability progression in neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He pioneers quantitative MRI biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic monitoring, with applications in clinical trials and personalized medicine.

The most recent publications highlight MRI’s role in detecting paramagnetic rim lesions in MS, neuroimaging endpoints in ALS, multishell diffusion MRI for white matter characterization, and age-related treatment responses in relapsing MS.
