Massimo Cocco is a Senior Seismologist and Senior Researcher at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), Roma 1, with a career spanning over two decades. He has held faculty roles as a Professor of Seismology at the University of Rome III, University of Milan, and University of Bologna, along with a lecturing position at the Rose School, University of Pavia.
- Current Role: Senior Researcher at INGV, Rome
- Past Academic Roles: Professor/Lecturer at multiple Italian universities
His research focuses on earthquake physics, fault interaction, and seismic hazard assessment. He has contributed to theoretical and observational studies of fault mechanics, dynamic rupture propagation, and pore pressure effects on seismicity. His work bridges natural fault observations (via geophysical and geological measurements) with laboratory-scale experimental faults.
Key trends in his publications include earthquake dynamics, Coulomb stress modeling, and geodetic/seismic data inversion techniques. His 110+ peer-reviewed papers reflect expertise in seismology and geophysics, with an H-index of 34 and recognition as one of the top 10 most cited scientists in earthquake science by ScienceDirect in 2010.
Scientific honors include:
- Chair of the European Research Council (ERC) grant panel PE10 (Earth System Sciences)
- Leadership in major infrastructure projects like EPOS (European Plate Observing System)
- Membership in the Scientific Council of EUCENTRE and Scientific Board of GEM
He has served as president of ERC grant committees and holds editorial roles for journals such as Journal of Geophysical Research and Geophysical Journal International. As a leader in European and international earth sciences, he coordinates research frameworks and contributes to national civil protection initiatives.
