María Lourdes Calzada Coco is a Research Professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), based at the Institute of Materials Science of Madrid (ICMM), where she leads the Electroactive Oxides for Smart Devices research group.
Her research centers on the synthesis and characterization of functional metal oxides through soft-chemistry routes, specializing in nanostructures, thin films, and bulk materials. She pioneers low-temperature sol-gel/solution strategies for metal oxide integration with semiconductor and flexible substrates (Si-technology and Flexible Electronics), with groundbreaking work on ferroelectric, multiferroic, and photoferroic complex oxides for next-generation flexible devices. Her group maintains global leadership in this niche, emphasizing sustainable processing for advanced digital technologies.
Dr. Calzada has secured funding for over 30 R&D projects and authored 200+ scientific papers and 9 book chapters. She is co-inventor of 3 patents and served as Guest Editor for Chemistry - A European Journal's 2020 special issue on low-temperature oxide synthesis. Her professional service includes editorial board memberships and steering committee roles for international conferences.
The Electroactive Oxides for Smart Devices laboratory drives innovation in flexible oxide electronics, focusing on scalable fabrication methods for applications in sensors, memory devices, and energy-efficient systems.
