María Ignacia-Barraza is an Assistant Professor in the Department of World Languages and Literatures at Simon Fraser University. Her research focuses on Spanish literary generations of 1898 and 1927, 19th and 20th century Latin American poetry and prose, film, visual arts, and Gaston Bachelard's theories.

Her latest work explores traditionalist religio-military myths of Hispanismo as foundational narratives in the Cuban War of Independence, analyzing texts by Manuel Ciges Aparicio and José Martí through the lens of liminality and historical context. She teaches courses such as WL 104W: Modern World Literatures and WL 410: Selected Topic in World Literature I.
