María DeGuzmán is Eugene H. Falk Distinguished Professor of English & Comparative Literature at UNC Chapel Hill and Founding Director of the UNC Latina/o Studies Program. Her interdisciplinary scholarship bridges literary studies, visual culture, and creative practice, with specializations in Latina/o aesthetics, night studies, and queer theory.
Research explores photographic practices, LatinX identity construction, and decolonial methodologies. Her creative work includes conceptual photography exhibited internationally and music composition published on SoundCloud.
Teaching recognitions include the University Teaching Award (2019) and Tanner Award for Undergraduate Excellence (2005). Scholarly books include Spain’s Long Shadow (2005), Buenas Noches, American Culture (2012), and Understanding John Rechy (2019).
