Mary Tinetti is the Gladys Phillips Crofoot Professor of Medicine (Geriatrics) at Yale School of Medicine and a Professor in the Institution for Social and Policy Studies. She holds primary appointments in Geriatric Medicine and Internal Medicine, and is affiliated with the Investigative Medicine Program and the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center.
Her educational background includes an MD from the University of Michigan (1978), residency at the University of Minnesota (1981), and fellowship training at the University of Rochester and Monroe Hospital (1984).
Dr. Tinetti’s research centers on improving clinical decision-making for older adults with multiple chronic conditions. She is internationally recognized for her work on multimorbidity, patient-centered care, and fall prevention. Her research focuses on measuring the net benefits and harms of medications, understanding therapeutic competition, and aligning care with patient priorities. She leads the national Patient Priorities Care initiative, which aims to transform healthcare delivery by integrating patient goals into clinical decisions.
Her recent publications highlight trends in patient-centered outcomes, medication safety, and health services research for older adults. These works emphasize universal health outcomes, decision-making frameworks, and reducing healthcare burden through goal-concordant care.
