Associate Professor Mary Thompson is an academic in Small Animal Medicine at The University of Sydney, with prior roles at The University of Queensland and Murdoch University. She holds a BVSc(Hons) and PhD, specializing in clinical academic veterinary medicine. Her research focuses on urinary tract health in companion animals, antimicrobial use reduction, and Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) therapeutics. She has supervised multiple postgraduate students, including Wen-Jie Yang (2021) and Emily Jones (2020).
Education: Graduated BVSc(Hons) from Sydney University, followed by clinical training in the US. Completed a PhD at The University of Queensland. Professional affiliations include the Australian Veterinary Association and American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
Research Interests: Mary combines clinical experience with microbiology expertise to address urinary tract infections, microbiome analysis in cats with chronic kidney disease, and novel FIP treatments. Current collaborations include work with Prof. Jacqueline Norris and Dr. Andrew McPherson on urinary microbiome studies and FIP drug trials.
Awards: Received Murdoch University’s Vice Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching Award twice (2019, 2017), and a travel grant from the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (2014).
Grants & Advising: Lead researcher on grants for bacteriophage therapy (2025), FIP treatment monitoring (2022), and FeLV drug development (2017). Advised PhD student Sally Coggins on FIP therapeutic interventions.
Teaching: Contributes to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, including courses VET6303 and VET6404.
