Mary T. Freeman is an Assistant Professor of New England History at the University of Maine, specializing in the social, political, and cultural history of slavery and emancipation in 19th-century New England. Her research focuses on abolitionism, African American history, and women’s history. She holds a PhD from Columbia University and a BA from Williams College.
Her current book project examines letter writing in the antislavery movement, arguing that correspondence facilitated marginalized groups like African Americans and women to engage in national politics. She is also researching abolitionism and African American politics in Portland, Maine, from the late 18th century through Reconstruction. Freeman is committed to public and digital history, having contributed to Columbia’s 'Columbia and Slavery' project.
She teaches courses on Maine history, slavery and emancipation, the Early Republic, and African American History. Her work integrates local history, primary source research, and digital technologies, reflecting her goal to make history accessible and engaging.
