Professor Mary Patricia Ryan is a leading academic in Materials Science, currently serving at Imperial College London's Faculty of Engineering. She specializes in electrochemistry and interfacial material science, with a focus on corrosion mechanisms, nanostructured materials, and heritage conservation. Ryan holds multiple leadership roles, including Vice Dean of Research for the Faculty of Engineering and Director of the Imperial-Shell University Technology Centre in Advanced Interfacial Materials Science. She is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
- Education: University of Manchester (PhD in Materials Science)
- Key Research Areas: Corrosion prevention, electrochemical systems, nanomaterials for biosensing, and heritage conservation
Ryan's research spans fundamental studies of oxide formation and electrochemical stability, with applications in industrial materials and cultural heritage preservation. Her work with synchrotron X-rays revolutionized analysis of reactive electrochemical systems. As editor of Nature's Materials Degradation Journal, she shapes global discourse on material failure mechanisms. Collaborations with institutions like the Mary Rose Trust and Science Museum demonstrate her interdisciplinary impact.
Scientific awards include:
- 2022 CBE for services to education and materials science
- 2015 Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering
Ryan has advised on high-profile conservation projects, including the Dornier Do 17 aircraft recovery, and leads EPSRC-funded initiatives through her Strategic Advisory Network membership. Her research group explores thermal management materials and nanoparticle-biological interactions.
