Mary Osborn is an Honorary Professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Göttingen and a Cell biologist at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry since 1975. Her research focuses on the cytoskeleton and microtubules of eukaryotic cells, contributing significantly to cell and developmental biology. She has held leadership roles, including President of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (2003–2006) and Chair of the Cell Biology Section at Academia Europaea (1997–2002).
Her academic journey includes a Doctorate honoris causa from the Pomeranian Medical Academy (1997) and election to the Academia Europaea (1995) and European Molecular Biology Organization (1979). Notable awards include the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award (2002) and the Meyenburg Prize for Cancer Research (1987).
Osborn has actively contributed to scientific governance, serving on the Helmholtz Society Board of Trustees (1994–1997) and the Biofuture Prize Jury (1998–2009). Her work bridges experimental and theoretical approaches to cellular mechanics, with implications for cancer research and developmental biology.
