Dr. Mary Menton is a Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow's School of Health & Wellbeing, affiliated with the GALLANT Project focusing on Glasgow's just transition to net-zero. Her work bridges environmental justice, climate change, and multi-sector sustainability challenges across academic and non-academic sectors.
Her research spans environmental defenders' experiences, indigenous rights, and policy reforms in resource conflicts. Notable projects include the Atmospheres of Violence project analyzing violence against environmental defenders and the Another Sky initiative documenting land conflicts in Brazil. She has collaborated with international organizations like UNEP, IUCN, and NGOs such as TRAFFIC and IIED.
Her publications (2020–2023) critically examine environmental governance, SDG implementation gaps, and the intersection of pandemic impacts with resource conflicts. She co-edited Environmental Defenders: Deadly Struggles for Life and Territory, a landmark volume on global environmental activism.
Recent work emphasizes decolonial approaches to climate justice and the role of governance in mediating ecosystem services and poverty alleviation. Menton's interdisciplinary approach integrates policy analysis, political ecology, and participatory methods with indigenous communities.
