Mary McIntyre is a Reader in Fine Art at Belfast School of Art, Ulster University, where she also serves as Course Director of MFA Fine Art. With over three decades of artistic practice, McIntyre has established herself as a significant figure in contemporary photography and installation art, exhibiting internationally at venues including the Venice Biennale, The Courtauld Institute in London, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
McIntyre's research focuses on the exploration of space in various forms, particularly photographic depictions of forgotten or overlooked places. Her work often carries psychological undertones, suggesting traces of human presence in landscapes and interiors. She investigates how photographs function as physical objects within gallery spaces and how the surrounding environment influences viewer experience. Through large-scale sculptural installations, she creates bespoke environments that activate the rooms her photographs inhabit, blurring boundaries between physical and pictorial space.
Her recent artistic output demonstrates a clear trajectory toward increasingly collaborative and cross-disciplinary practices. The integration of modular synth compositions commissioned through her electronic record label TONN Recordings adds multi-sensory dimensions to her exhibitions, creating immersive environments where visual and auditory elements interact to heighten the viewer's engagement. Her 2021 solo exhibition 'Places We Think We Know' at Dundee Contemporary Arts exemplifies this evolution, combining photographic works with spatial interventions and sound elements.
