Mary Leech is a Professor and School Associate Director at the School of the Environment, San Francisco State University. Her research focuses on petrology, geochemistry, and geochronology, with a particular emphasis on ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism, subduction zone dynamics, and the tectonics of mountain building. She has conducted fieldwork in mountain belts worldwide, including the Himalayas, the Scandinavian Caledonides, and the Ural Mountains.
- B.S. in Geology, San Jose State University
- Ph.D. in Geological and Environmental Sciences, Stanford University
Her work integrates advanced analytical techniques such as U-Pb dating, electron microprobe analysis, and Raman spectroscopy to study metamorphic processes and continental collision. Recent research highlights include investigations into diamond preservation in UHP complexes and ultrahigh-temperature metamorphism in the Adirondack Highlands. Articles published since 2014 reflect a focus on migmatite dynamics, subduction zone evolution, and tectonic models.
Dr. Leech’s contributions to geoscience education include a guided inquiry approach to teaching U.S. geology. She oversees laboratory facilities and has mentored numerous students in field and analytical research.
