Emily Walsh is a Professor of Geology in the Department of Geology at the University of Iowa, teaching courses including Physical Geology (GEO 111), Iowa Geology (GEO 114), Mineralogy (GEO 212), and advanced petrology courses.

Professor Walsh specializes in ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism, tectonics, and petrology, with fieldwork focused on the Western Gneiss Region of Norway and the North Qaidam UHP belt in China. Her research integrates field geology, geochemistry, and geochronology to reconstruct pressure-temperature-time paths of metamorphic terranes, particularly examining exhumation mechanisms in subduction zones.
Analysis of her 2004-2013 publications reveals consistent focus on Norwegian ultrahigh-pressure terranes, utilizing thermochronology, trace-element geochemistry, and structural analysis to model exhumation histories. Her collaborative work frequently addresses tectonic evolution through zircon dating and thermobarometric techniques applied to eclogites and associated rocks.
Professor Walsh has mentored over 20 student researchers, guiding projects on thermobarometry of UHP eclogites, zircon geochronology, and structural analysis across global field sites including Norway, China, and Vermont. Her advisees have investigated topics ranging from rubies in Alpine settings to permafrost-related instabilities and Precambrian gneiss complexes.
