Mary Kathryn Barbier is a Professor in the Department of History at Mississippi State University. She specializes in Military History, American History, European History (1870–Present), and Latin American History, with particular expertise in intelligence studies, espionage, and war-related cultural narratives. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Southern Mississippi and a postdoctoral fellowship from Yale University’s International Security Studies.

- Professional Roles: Co-editor of War in History; Co-director of the Second World War Research Group – North America (SWWRG-NA); Co-series editor of a six-volume cultural history of war (scheduled for 2024).
Her research focuses on military strategy, intelligence operations during World War II, and the cultural impact of warfare. Notable works include Kursk: The Greatest Tank Battle Ever Fought 1943 (2002) and Spies, Lies, and Citizenship: The Hunt for Nazi Criminals (2014). She has also co-edited collections on the Vietnam War and WWII scholarship.
Barbier is actively involved in professional organizations, serving as Vice-President (and future President) of the Society for Intelligence History (SIH). She has organized regional conferences and developed specialized courses like History of Grand Strategy and Intelligence Gathering.
Current projects include A Candle in the Wind: The Life of World War II Double Agent Lily Sergueiew and Following Sinatra’s Lead: Determined Women Who Did It Their Way.
