Mary Katherine Deen is a资深 Family and 4-H Youth Development Specialist at Washington State University (WSU) Extension since 1996. She holds a Ph.D. in Adult Education (University of Idaho, 1997) and has extensive experience in youth development, community outreach, and cultural competency training. Her work focuses on fostering youth-adult partnerships, international agricultural education, and inclusive programming.
Professional highlights include serving as Extension Diversity Director (2004-2010), leading the National 4-H Youth Development Practitioner Apprenticeship Certificate Program (2002-2004), and developing cultural competency training for extension professionals (2014). She has held academic roles such as instructor in Adult and Youth Education at WSU Pullman (1995-1996).
Research interests emphasize youth development methodologies, cross-cultural program adaptation, and community-based education. Her work in Burundi, Africa demonstrates her commitment to global youth empowerment through school gardening initiatives. She has authored/co-authored over a dozen peer-reviewed articles on 4-H program efficacy, cultural competency, and youth-adult collaboration.
Her career includes roles in Germany (USDA/Army School Age Specialist, 1995-1996) and early career positions in child development, including preschool teaching and program coordination in Washington and Idaho.
