Dr. Mary K. Gayne is an Associate Professor in the History Department at James Madison University (JMU). She holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University and specializes in Old Regime France, with research focusing on absolutist state-building, everyday life, gender, and economic practices. Her work examines intersections of culture, labor, and market dynamics in early modern France, including studies of wigmaking and social mobility.
Dr. Gayne teaches courses in World History, European History, French History, and Global Urban History. She directs an integrative research project on global urban history in Harrisonburg (1965–2020), emphasizing immigration and refugee resettlement. She has held prestigious fellowships at the Institute for Historical Research (UT Austin) and the Bourse Chateaubriand program.
Her scholarly contributions include analyses of cultural politics in French history, illicit economic practices, and marginalized communities in 20th-century America. She actively participates in JMU’s General Education initiatives, shaping interdisciplinary curricula at the 300-level.
