Mary K. Bercaw Edwards

Mary K. Bercaw Edwards is Professor of English and Director of the Maritime Studies Program at the University of Connecticut, specializing in Herman Melville studies, maritime literature, and American literary history. Her research examines the intersections of nautical culture, textual scholarship, and 19th-century literature, with particular focus on Melville's whaling experiences and their influence on American letters. She holds an MA and PhD from Northwestern University and is a licensed U.S. Coast Guard Master of Near-Coastal Auxiliary Sail Vessels.

Her scholarship explores sailor vernacular, cannibal discourse in Pacific literature, and textual editing of Melville's works. Recent publications analyze Melville's engagement with whaling history, naval service, and cross-cultural encounters. Edwards chairs the Melville Society Archives and edits Extracts for Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies.

Honors include the Gerald E. Morris Prize, Felberbaum Family Faculty Award, and multiple National Endowment for the Humanities grants. She has directed NEH institutes on Melville and maritime studies and frequently collaborates with Mystic Seaport Museum.

With extensive seafaring experience including global circumnavigation, Edwards integrates practical maritime knowledge into literary scholarship, offering unique perspectives on sea narratives and authorial biography.
