Mary Edwards Calhoun served as the Edgar Memorial Professor of English and Chair of the English Department at Wilson College from 1913. She held a diploma from Teachers College, Columbia University (1898), a BA from Barnard College (1904), and an MA from Columbia University (1905). Prior to her appointment, she taught at Tome School and the Horace Mann School. Dr. Anna J. McKeag, Wilson College President, secured her position based on her strong academic credentials and recommendations. Calhoun’s responsibilities included overseeing two department members, designing course distribution, and chairing committees on Publications and Literary Societies. She co-authored Reading from American Literature, an anthology for high school and undergraduate students, published in 1913 by Ginn & Company.
Her academic focus emphasized foundational English education, with particular attention to freshman composition and literary analysis. She advocated for faculty oversight of student presentations and collaborated with Dr. McKeag on textbook selections, notably adopting Dr. Palmer’s Self-Cultivation in English. Calhoun’s leadership extended to institutional policies, such as regulating public events and advocating for curricular coherence.
