Mary Cronin is a Social Scientist and College Lecturer (50% contract) in the School of Public Health (SPH) at University College Cork (UCC) since 2006. She serves as lead academic for Health Promotion teaching and Co-Chair of the College of Medicine and Health's Civic and Community Engagement committee. Her research focuses on structural determinants of health inequities, particularly among marginalized groups like the Traveller community, and participatory research methods.

Research Interests: Mary’s work emphasizes participatory research, health inequities, and the Traveller community’s health. She leads a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) project on Traveller microbiome health and co-led the qualitative strand of the ULTRA project in Tanzania, piloting digital maternal health records. She is completing a PhD on CBPR methodologies.
Grants & Collaborations:
- Recipient of a UNIC4ER grant to train Traveller peer researchers (2024–2025)
- Collaborations include APC Microbiome Ireland, Kilimanjaro Clinical Research Institute, and INFANT Centre
Awards: Third Sector Research Programme post-graduate research bursary (Royal Irish Academy, 2003).
Teaching & Mentorship: Supervised 18 Master’s dissertations and 2 PhD theses. Teaches Health Promotion, Social Policy, and qualitative research methods. Active member of the Inclusion Health Research Group and SHAPE cluster at ISS21.
