Dr. Mary Beth Werdel is a Professor at Fordham University's Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education, serving as Director of the Mental Health Counseling and Spiritual Integration and Pastoral Care programs. She holds a doctorate in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola University Maryland. Her teaching focuses on clinical and research topics for graduate pastoral care students, including courses like Research for Pastoral Counselors and Death, Dying and Bereavement.
Her research explores spirituality’s role in coping with loss, stress, and trauma, particularly in families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder and immigrant communities. She has presented at conferences such as the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and authored influential books including The Paradox of Trauma and Growth (2023) and The Resilient Clinician (2023). She serves on Fordham’s Middle States Re-accreditation committee and reviews for the Journal of Psychology and Religion.
Dr. Werdel’s clinical expertise includes bi-lingual family therapy, specializing in trauma-informed interventions and culturally responsive care for immigrant families from Mexico, El Salvador, and Honduras. She integrates Relationship Enhancement Therapy and Filial Therapy methodologies into her practice.
